As a photographer, I often meet strangers and am tasked with making a photograph that reveals something about them. In this exercise I'll be pushing my own limits and challenging myself to make 24 portraits of 24 strangers in 24 hours. The strangers are connected through their participation in this project, and I'll be collaborating with each of them to make a portrait that reflects some of their individual truths or stories. As the 24 hours progress, I'll be printing the portraits and hanging them in the gallery, creating over the process a cohesive community of photographs. </p> <p>Artist Statement:</p> <p>My work revolves around the exploration of subculture and community. I alternately immerse myself within real subcultures and communities and document them, and construct fictional ones by making images in disparate situations and bringing them together to form a contrived community. I’m interested in the sense of inclusion and support that community members provide one another, and how the struggles, needs, and desires within these communities adhere them together. For me, photography is the perfect medium to explore these themes, because the still-framing and capturing of a moment in photographs mirrors the way communities and subcultures tend to self-isolate.<br /><a href="http://www.alanwinslow.com">www.alanwinslow.com</a><br /><a href="http://www.geographyofyouth.org">www.geographyofyouth.org</a></p> <p> </p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/art-gallery" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">ART GALLERY</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/dumbo" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">DUMBO</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/culture" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">CULTURE</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/photography" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">PHOTOGRAPHY</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/art-gallery-brooklyn-nyc-dumbo-performance" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">#art #gallery #brooklyn #nyc #dumbo #performance</a></div></div></div> Thu, 19 Feb 2015 17:15:48 +0000 rabbitholeprojects 851 at https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/thurs-march-5th-reveal-24-portraits-24-strangers-24-hours#comments Thursday June 19th: BinAural/Visual https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/thursday-june-19th-binauralvisual <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"> <p><div class="field field-name-file field-type-file field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="styles file-styles large styles-field-file styles-style-large styles-container-image"><div class="media-thumbnail-frame"><img alt="" class="media-image" height="309" width="480" typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/201406/1901427_717404308301739_3167413616041604576_n.jpg?itok=thNHy-o-" /></div></div></div></div></div></p> <p> </p> <p><strong><span class="fsl">Rabbitholeprojects is proud to present: BinAural/Visual</span></strong><br /><br /><span class="fsl">Thursday, June 19 2014</span><br /><br /><span class="fsl">730pm-1030pm<br /><span class="text_exposed_show"> $5 suggested donation<br /><br /><span class="null">Bubblyfish presents:</span>:<br /><a href="http://www.bubblyfish.com/moori/"><br /> | moori |</a><br /><a href="http://www.bubblyfish.com/moori/"><span>http://www.bubblyfish.com/</span>moori/</a><br /><br /><span class="null"><a href="http://www.bubblyfish.com">Moori</a> allows audience members to participate in an interactive performance. 2nd Opening Reception 6-10PM<br /><br />Artist <strong><a href="">Diego Mejia</a></strong> was born in 1976 in Queens, New York. He and some friends from school started doing graffiti when he was young giving birth to his love of art. As a child, he was constantly doodling on paper, fabrics and walls. At age 15, he moved to Colombia, South America to live with his grandmother. While there, he developed an appreciation for nature, landscapes and the bright colors he observed in the mountains, trees and animal life. For him it was like being five years old again, reviving his love for the spontaneous painting of his graffiti roots, improvising with wild lines and experimenting with colors and figures on paper, wood, and canvas. He eventually went on to study visual arts at the University Jorge Tadeo Lozano in Bogota, Colombia, studying with several Colombian maestros all the while learning and searching for more color and letting his flow of lines become more secure and free.<br /><br />Today Mejia is best known for his spontaneous abstract / surrealist improv paintings. His work has been in several group shows in Colombia, Connecticut and New York.</p> <p><div class="field field-name-file field-type-file field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="styles file-styles large styles-field-file styles-style-large styles-container-image"><div class="media-thumbnail-frame"><img alt="" class="media-image" height="480" width="358" typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/201304/532893_10151375124257709_541894370_n_0.jpg?itok=lUoLIj7x" /></div></div></div></div></div></p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/art-gallery" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">ART GALLERY</a></div></div></div> Tue, 30 Apr 2013 17:39:29 +0000 rabbitholeprojects 756 at https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/thu-may-2nd-diego-mejia-five-nights-sandy#comments Thu Apr 4th: PAOLA NUÑEZ SOLORIO "Serenade For New York" https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/thu-apr-4th-paola-nu%C3%B1ez-solorio-serenade-new-york <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"> <p><a href="http://rabbitholeprojects.bigcartel.com"><div class="field field-name-file field-type-file field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="styles file-styles large styles-field-file styles-style-large styles-container-image"><div class="media-thumbnail-frame"><img alt="" class="media-image" height="320" width="480" typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/201304/580555_10151301090401426_205056387_n_0.jpg?itok=Eqm-Bu-b" /></div></div></div></div></div></a></p> <p>RABBITHOLE PROJECTS &amp; MANO A MANO<br />Mexican Culture Without Borders are proud to present</p> <h3>"SERENADE FOR NEW YORK" An exhibition by PAOLA NUÑEZ SOLORIO</h3> <p>Curated by Nyahzul</p> <p>THURS April 4th Opening Reception 6-10PM<br /><br />SPECIAL PERFORMANCES BY</p> <h3>Mariachi Tapatío de Álvaro Paulino<br />Mariachi Real de México de Ramón Ponce</h3> <p><a href="http://www.paolanunez.net">Paola Núñez Solorio</a> is one of the most dynamic visual artists working today. No culture can subsist without people passing on their legacy to younger generations, a tall order for immigrants in particular.<br /><br />Support for the exhibition Serenade for New York is provided, in part by, Cantina Royal, Colgate, Genesis Beverage Brands, Rabbithole Projects, and public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council.<br /><br />For more information:<br /><a href="http://paolanunez.net"><br />Paola Núñez Solorio</a><br /><br /><a href="http://manoamano.us/en/serenadefornewyork.html">Mano a Mano: Mexican Culture Without Borders</a><br /><br /><a href="http://nytimes.com/2013/02/03/nyregion/mexican-music-for-lifes-milestones.html">New York Times</a><br /><br /><a href="http://nytimes.com/slideshow/2013/02/03/nyregion/20130203MARIACHIss.html">New York Times Slide Show</a><br /><br /><a href="http://nbclatino.com/2013/04/02/photos-photographer-explains-immigration-through-a-mariachi-lens/#s:serenadefeatured">NBC Latino</a><br /><br /><a href="http://es-us.noticias.yahoo.com/exponen-brooklyn-serie-fotograf%C3%ADas-mariachis-york-211814527.html">Yahoo Noticias</a><br /><a href="http://cosmopolitan.com/cosmo-latina/blog/mariachi-state-of-mind"><br />COSMOPOLITAN</a><br /><a href="http://cuartoscuro.com.mx/2012/12/serenata-a-nueva-york-paola-nunez/"><br />Cuarto Oscuro</a><br /><br /><a href="http://elimparcial.com/EdicionEnLinea/Notas/VidayEstilo/05042013/688480-Exponen-en-Brooklyn-serie-de-fotografias-sobre-mariachis-de-NY.aspx">El imparcial</a><br /><a href="http://elporvenir.com.mx/notas.asp?nota_id=659309"><br />EL porvenir</a><br /><br /><a href="http://proyecto40.com/?p=23976">Proyecto 40</a><br /><a href="http://mexicomigrante.com.mx/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=21123:exponen-en-brooklyn-fotografias-de-mariachis&amp;catid=68:personajes-y-hechos&amp;Itemid=397"><br />Mexico Migrante</a><br /><br /><a href="http://caracteres.mx/exponen-en-brooklyn-serie-de-fotografias-sobre-mariachis-de-nueva-york/">Caracteres.mx</a><br /><br /><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/62BNrY4CL9lWroKw3NKwCV5ru4mH7vO7bSeMpOJAVbs">Picasaweb</a></p> <p><a href="http://monterreytimes.com.mx/archivos/43218">Monterrey Times</a><br /><a href="http://portaltempus.com.mx/exponen-en-brooklyn-serie-de-fotografias-sobre-mariachis-de-nueva-york/"><br />Portal Tempus</a></p> <p><a href="http://noticiasprimero.com/2013/04/05/exponen-en-brooklyn-serie-de-fotografias-sobre-mariachis-de-nueva-york/">Noticias primero</a><br /><a href="http://mciny.org/?event=serenade-in-new-york"><br />The Mexican Culture Institute of New York</a></p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/art-gallery" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">ART GALLERY</a></div></div></div> Tue, 02 Apr 2013 01:12:06 +0000 rabbitholeprojects 706 at https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/thu-apr-4th-paola-nu%C3%B1ez-solorio-serenade-new-york#comments FRI 28 SEP: Boris Brenman "FACE/OFF" https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/fri-28-sep-boris-brenman-faceoff <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"> <p><div class="field field-name-file field-type-file field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="styles file-styles large styles-field-file styles-style-large styles-container-image"><div class="media-thumbnail-frame"><img alt="" class="media-image" height="480" width="371" typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/hail_kim.jpg?itok=Pt2T2yiW" /></div></div></div></div></div><br /><i>Hail Kim!, 2012, Oil on canvas, 48” x 60” inches</i></p> <div><h2><strong>BORIS BRENMAN</strong><br /><em>FACE/OFF</em></h2>SEPTEMBER  28-30, 2012<div> </div><div><strong>Opening Reception: </strong></div><div>Friday, 28th September, 6-10PM</div><div> </div></div> <div> </div> <div>NEW YORK – Boris Brenman's solo exhibition, FACE/OFF opens at Rabbithole Projects in Brooklyn on September 28, 2012 as part of the Dumbo Arts Festival. Brenman’s enigmatic but powerful paintings merge fictional narratives and the possibility of an alternate universe with a brazen honesty in portraiture. </div> <div> </div> <div>The works in FACE/OFF reveal a satirical, no-holds-barred approach, whether it is a humorous glorification of Russian President Vladimir Putin as the savior of Moscow or an emotional portrait of a tattooed woman leering at the viewer. Therefore, the works reflect the artist's personal angst and struggle in comprehending the nature of man. This is apparent in Hail Kim!, a large portrait of the North Korean head of state, Kim Jong-un. Here, Kim's visage is transformed into a target alluding to the Western propagandist portrayals of the leader as being threatening to his citizens and democratic progress. In contrast, the green background represents prosperity and a fresh start in Korean culture. Yet, Kim's portrayal remains sinister as the look in his eyes and the lack of a neck signify distrust from outside world and echoes his father's policy of isolation. </div> <div> </div> <div>Hail Kim! like the rest of it's companions is a veracious and ambiguous synthesis of ideas that intertwines past, present, and future as well as fact and fiction. The works grows like an organism evolving from an awareness of its environment to an exploration of all that is psychological, personal, iconic, historical, and eternal. </div> <div> </div> <div>Boris Brenman is a visual artist who creates paintings, sculptures, and photographs that depict fictional narratives. In the process of painting, alternate universes emerge from the work similar to the concepts in works of Trenton Doyle Hancock or Junot Diaz where characters have both supernatural and human powers. Brenman’s work has been featured in several group exhibitions around Pittsburgh and New York since 2008. In addition, he has paintings that are in private collections throughout the United States. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Carnegie Mellon University in May 2011 and is currently working as an artist in New York.</div> <div> </div> <p><div class="field field-name-file field-type-file field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="styles file-styles large styles-field-file styles-style-large styles-container-image"><div class="media-thumbnail-frame"><img alt="" class="media-image" style="width: 200px; height: 93px; " typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/dumboartsfest.jpg?itok=phOe1JAa" width="417" height="194" /></div></div></div></div></div></p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/art-gallery" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">ART GALLERY</a></div></div></div> Thu, 27 Sep 2012 16:56:39 +0000 rabbitholeprojects 646 at https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/fri-28-sep-boris-brenman-faceoff#comments THU JUL 05th: IVANIA GUERRERO "Bearing Witness" https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/thu-jul-05th-ivania-guerrero-bearing-witness <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"> <p><div class="field field-name-file field-type-file field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="styles file-styles original styles-field-file styles-style-original styles-container-image"><div class="media-thumbnail-frame"><img alt="" class="media-image" height="600" style="width: 500px; height: 333px; " width="900" typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/sites/default/files/Bearing-Witness2_m.jpg" /></div></div></div></div></div></p> <h3><strong>IVANIA GUERRERO</strong><br /><em>BEARING WITNESS</em></h3> <div>JULY 5TH - 31ST 2012</div> <div>  </div> <div><strong>OPENING RECEPTION</strong>:</div> <div>THU JULY 5th 2012, 7:00 - 10:00 pm </div> <div> </div> <div><div>Rabbithole Gallery is pleased to present BEARING WITNESS, an exhibition by artist Ivania Guerrero.</div><div> </div><div>ARTIST. SCULPTOR. Ivania Guerrero was born in Nicaragua in 1978. At the age of five she, along with her mother and siblings, migrated through the dangerous Mexican-US border to Miami. Her work is inspired by childhood fears of war from a 1979 Nicaraguan uprising that forced her father to flee from political persecution and live in exile in the U.S.  As a survivor of war, she ties in similar narratives from the Holocaust into her work.</div><div> </div><div>Ivania Guerrero's work consists of ceramic and mixed media 'babies' that manifest from fear and violence but are created with tenderness, delicacy and innocence. Through an active process of making, she strives to create the perfect 'baby' while grappling with the distressing relationships of fear, trauma, love and intimacy. Varying in height, texture, and character these sculptures represent remnants of empty shells that once contained the bodies of children and are reminiscent of the loss of childhood innocence and the hopelessness that inevitably follows when children bear witness to violence and abuse during war. She will also be showing drawings that not only relate to war but also give viewers the impression that they have been there and have bore witness to these moments.</div><div> </div><div>GELLA ZEFIRA, CURATOR</div><div> </div></div> <div> </div> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/art-gallery" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">ART GALLERY</a></div></div></div> Fri, 22 Jun 2012 20:50:18 +0000 rabbitholeprojects 626 at https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/thu-jul-05th-ivania-guerrero-bearing-witness#comments Thu JUN 07th: Inner Distance Salon Show https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/thu-jun-07th-inner-distance-salon-show <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"> <p><div class="field field-name-file field-type-file field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="styles file-styles original styles-field-file styles-style-original styles-container-image"><div class="media-thumbnail-frame"><img alt="" class="media-image" height="810" style="width: 309px; height: 500px; " width="500" typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/sites/default/files/THE_PAINTER_m.jpg" /></div></div></div></div></div><br />(Above: <em>The Painter</em> by Catalina Toro) </p> <h2><strong>INNER DISTANCE salon show:</strong></h2> <div><strong>Mira Alibek</strong></div> <div><strong>Phil Buchanan</strong></div> <div><strong>Elisa Dallas</strong></div> <div><strong>Angelo Franco</strong></div> <div><strong>Cristina Garcia</strong></div> <div><strong>Camilo Hernandez</strong></div> <div><strong>Raymond Klecker</strong></div> <div><strong>Paola Nunez</strong></div> <div><strong>Camilo Pinto</strong></div> <div><strong>Johannah O'Donnell</strong></div> <div><strong>Pam Treadwell </strong></div> <div><strong>and </strong></div> <div><strong>Catalina Toro</strong></div> <div> </div> <div>curated by Nyahzul</div> <div><strong>  </strong></div> <div><strong>OPENING RECEPTION:</strong></div> <div>THU JUNE 7th 2012, 7:00 - 10:00 pm</div> <div>with <strong>DJ Earthian</strong></div> <div><em>djearthian.com</em></div> <div> </div> <div>Rabbithole Gallery is pleased to present, Inner Distance Salon Show: Paint</div> <div>with twelve artists from Brooklyn New York, Bogota, Colombia and Orlando, Florida.</div> <div>Mira Alibek, Phil Buchanan, Elisa Dallas, Angelo Franco, Cristina Garcia, Camilo Hernandez, Raymond Klecker, Paola Nunez, Camilo Pinto, Johannah O'Donnell, Pam Treadwell and Catalina Toro.</div> <div> </div> <div>In our day and age of constant, continuous, and instantaneous connectivity via our technological communications we think we are closer to one another yet in reality, we are much further apart. We share, we like, we tweet, and we comment but how often do we debate at length on literature, wax exhaustively regarding brushstroke techniques, or lose our minds in a lengthy impromptu musical solo performance? We connect but its as fleeting as a rock skipping across the smooth surface of a silent river. We are so very far away from the intimate and intense days of salon show when peers, colleagues, and friends exposed their art and their ideas to a group of individuals collected for the singular connection of fostering, critiquing, and protecting the cultural production of the day. In the spirit of returning to the intention of historical salons and academies and returning to a more natural state of discourse and hopefully a more natural state of ourselves.</div> <div> </div> <div> </div> <div><div>Camilo Hernandez </div><div><em><a href="http://www.camilohernandezamaya.com">www.camilohernandezamaya.com</a></em></div><div> </div><div>Mira Alibek</div><div><em><a href="http://miraalibek.com">http://miraalibek.com</a></em></div><div> </div><div>Johannah O'Donnell</div><div><em><a href="http://johannahodonnell.com">http://johannahodonnell.com</a></em></div><div> </div><div>Camilo Pinto</div><div><em><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/camiloart">http://www.flickr.com/photos/camiloart</a></em></div><div> </div><div>Phil Buchanan</div><div><em><a href="http://mister-phil.com">http://mister-phil.com</a></em></div><div> </div><div>Raymond Klecker</div><div><em><a href="http://www.raymondklecker.com">http://www.raymondklecker.com</a></em></div><div> </div><div>Paola Nuñez</div><div><em><a href="http://www.paolanunez.net">http://www.paolanunez.net</a></em></div><div> </div><div>Catalina Toro</div><div><em>catalinatoro-art.com</em></div><div> </div><div>Pam Treadwell</div><div><em><a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1095016051912.2015588.1121902082&amp;type=3">https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1095016051912.2015588.11219020...</a></em></div><div> </div><div>Elisa Dallas</div><div><em><a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.215943061805089.48683.100001681905666&amp;type=3">https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.215943061805089.48683.10000168...</a></em></div><div> </div><div><div>Cristina Garcia </div><div><em>cristinagarciatattoos.com</em></div></div><div> </div></div> <div> </div> <div><address>For additional information, please contact:<br />NYAHZUL, CURATOR<br /><a href="mailto:nyahzul@gmail.com">nyahzul@gmail.com</a><br /><a href="http://www.rabbitholeprojects.com">www.rabbitholeprojects.com</a></address></div> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/art-gallery" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">ART GALLERY</a></div></div></div> Tue, 29 May 2012 15:53:12 +0000 rabbitholeprojects 611 at https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/thu-jun-07th-inner-distance-salon-show#comments
