In this series, Aliman continues an exploration of inflatable sculpture, a medium that she sees to embody the dialectical relationship between recent pneumatic advances in architecture and the form of the human body.<br />Each sculpture serves as the premise for a unique take on the relationship of form and material, as it relates to pneumatic architecture. This new body of work examines the tactile quality of a selection of materials and expands on it’s architectural capabilities. By using air and space as medium, Aliman utilizes new and innovative ways of synthesizing the archetypes of human biology as a blossoming field within architecture.</p> <p>“With each inhale, a human body takes on the form of an inflatable.” Says Aliman when asked about the concepts that inspiration her creation, “ An inflatable is an animated representation of the act of breathing. Both humans and inflatables must continue breathing to maintain existence. When filled with air, both forms become sturdy, yet retain their flexibility and relative fragility. As we build an artificial envoirnment that encompases the breadth of civilization, we begin to question our relationship to these inanimate structures of our own design.” With the four sculptures of Aero Studies, Aliman strives to capture the moment that we become inquisitive of our surroundings and demand unity between forms that are biological, as well as, artificial.<br />Colette Aliman currently resides in New York City and earned a Baccalaureate of Fine Arts from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, located in Boston, MA. Her work has been exhibited throughout Cambridge and Boston including Mobius Gallery, the 808 Gallery at Boston University, YES.OUI.Si. Space, and Milkhaus. Aliman has recently completed a nine month residency at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn, NY and looks forward to an exhibition at the Gowanus Loft in the fall. In addition to being an exhibiting artist, Aliman is a furniture and textile designer and manufacturer, as well as the co-owner of a Brooklyn based design studio. I maintain a certain child-like fascination with and awe of vistas that propels me to the studio; it is my hope that viewers of the work will have an opportunity to engage in that awe as well.</p> <p>Being heavily influenced by hue, my work employs bright, saturated colors and deep, rich shadows boldly fused with exacting brushwork; I seek to play upon the visual drama that results from a meeting of light and dark. The medium of oil paint allows me the richness of pigment and the ease of blending that I enjoy. </p> <p>I paint using a ‘hyper-pigmentation’ method, which results in colors that wouldn’t normally be found in traditional landscape art. I do this to emphasize the vibrancy of the world around us, both visually and spiritually. Nature’s connection to the souls that share space with it is at once profound and uplifting; my colors reflect that radiance. It is my ultimate aim to push my work further in the atypical direction, resulting in a practice that produces large-scale, immersive pieces that dabble in the fantastical while remaining firmly rooted in a realistic representation of the natural world’s splendor.</p> <p><a href="http://www.mylaseabrook.com/" style="color:rgb(17,85,204);font-family:arial, sans-serif;font-size:12.8px;line-height:normal;">www.mylaseabrook.com</a></p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/art-gallery-brooklyn-nyc-dumbo-artexhibit-artindumbo" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">#art #gallery #brooklyn #nyc #dumbo #artexhibit #artindumbo</a></div></div></div> Mon, 25 Jul 2016 17:53:27 +0000 rabbitholeprojects 1401 at https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/thursday-august-4-finding-forever#comments Saturday, June 25: My Foolish Heart by Ana Benaroya https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/saturday-june-25-my-foolish-heart-ana-benaroya <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"> <p><div class="field field-name-file field-type-file field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="styles file-styles large styles-field-file styles-style-large styles-container-image"><div class="media-thumbnail-frame"><img alt="" class="media-image" height="348" width="480" typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/201606/MyFoolishHeart_AnaBenaroya.jpg?itok=Rplqkm7-" /></div></div></div></div></div><br /><a href="http://www.anabenaroya.com/">http://www.anabenaroya.com/</a></p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/art-gallery-brooklyn-nyc-dumbo-artexhibit-artindumbo" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">#art #gallery #brooklyn #nyc #dumbo #artexhibit #artindumbo</a></div></div></div> Wed, 15 Jun 2016 18:22:21 +0000 rabbitholeprojects 1301 at https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/saturday-june-25-my-foolish-heart-ana-benaroya#comments Saturday, June 18: Gather Around: Gigi Chen & John Breiner https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/saturday-june-18-gather-around-gigi-chen-john-breiner <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"> <p><div class="field field-name-file field-type-file field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="styles file-styles large styles-field-file styles-style-large styles-container-image"><div class="media-thumbnail-frame"><img alt="" class="media-image" height="181" width="480" typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/201606/13413657_10154224399904710_2184980733154458754_n.jpg?itok=IeGbmFyk" /></div></div></div></div></div></p> <p><strong>Gather Around: Gigi Chen &amp; John Breiner</strong><br />Saturday, June 18th<br />6-11pm </p> <p>Join us for the Two Person show of paintings and drawings by Gigi Chen and John Breiner.</p> <p><a href="http://johnbreiner.com"><strong>John Breiner</strong></a>:<br />My work is highly inspired by nature, the passing of time, and the reclaiming of surfaces. For the last decade, books, salvaged paper, wood, and found objects have been my work surfaces of choice. As an artist I look for a surface with stains and the telltale marks of a past life. I find inspiration from yellowed paper, peeling paint, or a water-damaged surface. I see these marks as a constant reminder that time stops for nothing. Almost exclusively discarded, I embrace these “lived” surfaces adding and subtracting layers to convey my own experiences and observations. My Hope in the end is to create a seamless interaction with the piece. To join image to surface as naturally as possible. </p> <p><strong>Bio</strong>:<br />Born in Poughkeepsie NY with a love for the ephemeral surface, John has been painting walls and Illustrating for close to two and a half decade’s. While the focus of his personal work revolves around the reuse of found items, (specifically old paper, books and book jackets) He has also painted large-scale murals, illustrations and various private commissions throughout the years.<br />John's work has been exhibited internationally (Turkey, Italy, Switzerland and China) as well as nationally in New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, Washington D.C, Philadelphia and San Francisco.</p> <p><a href="http://www.gigichen.com"><strong>Gigi Chen</strong></a><br />Gather Around:<br />All beings thrive on desire and passion. <br />The fabled story of the Bower Bird has long been a fascination for me. The little male songbird, can spend up to a year collecting twigs, berries and small objects in order to build beautiful and elaborate nests. All in the hopes of attracting a mate. These paintings are my empathetic reaction to the Bower Bird’s story. Lush settings, depicting objects I collected or scenes of a Louisiana swamp interwoven with pattern. We are all driven by the ideals and relentless toil of passion, desire and hope. Some just show it off. </p> <p><strong>Bio</strong>:<br />Born in Guang Dong, China and raised in New York, Gigi Chen creates an aesthetic that combines her training as a traditional animator and her love of Old Master techniques. Gigi’s is simple: Love + Fun = Art. <br />Gigi first exhibited her work in New York at Deitch Projects as part of the ARTSTAR reality based television program. Gigi’s exhibition credits also include the Queens Museum of Art, Mighty Tanaka Gallery and Stephen Romano Gallery in New York.</p> <p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/gigichen.art/" style="color:rgb(54,88,153);text-decoration:none;font-family:helvetica, arial, sans-serif;font-size:12px;line-height:15.36px;background-color:rgb(254,254,254);">https://www.instagram.com/gigichen.art/</a><br /><a href="https://www.facebook.com/GigiChenArtist?__mref=message_bubble" style="color:rgb(54,88,153);text-decoration:none;font-family:helvetica, arial, sans-serif;font-size:12px;line-height:15.36px;background-color:rgb(254,254,254);">www.facebook.com/GigiChenArtist</a></p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/art-gallery-brooklyn-nyc-dumbo-artexhibit-artindumbo" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">#art #gallery #brooklyn #nyc #dumbo #artexhibit #artindumbo</a></div></div></div> Wed, 08 Jun 2016 13:45:54 +0000 rabbitholeprojects 1291 at https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/saturday-june-18-gather-around-gigi-chen-john-breiner#comments Thursday, June 16: Praxis by Ashley Jones https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/thursday-june-16-praxis-ashley-jones <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"> <p><div class="field field-name-file field-type-file field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="styles file-styles large styles-field-file styles-style-large styles-container-image"><div class="media-thumbnail-frame"><img alt="" class="media-image" height="391" width="480" typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/201606/ashleyjones.jpg?itok=HZFkfBgL" /></div></div></div></div></div></p> <p>Praxis <br />by <a href="http://ashleynjones.com">Ashley Jones</a><br />Paintings </p> <p>Opening Reception 7:30-11</p> <p>Memory, or the act of remembering, is a form of creation. Each time we think back on a moment it is distorted from the truth. The more time that passes, the more distorted, or abstracted, the memory and our image of it becomes. Passing of time changes, simplifies, blurs the edges and rids detail, however, the memory retains merit in its new form. Time and abstraction are similar forces. I use found compositions as a framework to create paintings, some more abstract than others, and to explore how recollection and time passing affect our perception.</p> <div><a href="http://ashleynjones.com/" style="color:rgb(17,85,204);font-family:arial, sans-serif;font-size:12.8px;line-height:normal;">ashleynjones.com</a></div> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/art-gallery-brooklyn-nyc-dumbo-artexhibit-artindumbo" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">#art #gallery #brooklyn #nyc #dumbo #artexhibit #artindumbo</a></div></div></div> Mon, 06 Jun 2016 14:36:17 +0000 rabbitholeprojects 1286 at https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/thursday-june-16-praxis-ashley-jones#comments Sunday, June 12: Vague Name of Time https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/sunday-june-12-vague-name-time <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"> <p><div class="field field-name-file field-type-file field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="styles file-styles large styles-field-file styles-style-large styles-container-image"><div class="media-thumbnail-frame"><img alt="" class="media-image" height="320" width="480" typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/201606/Yoonjung.jpg?itok=bfn4_ImD" /></div></div></div></div></div></p> <p>“Vague Name of Time” is a legal conveyance of the uncertain verge between resolved and unresolved complications buoying in a flow of time that are materialized in a form of dream, architecture, obsession, and inquisition.  The collection of six artists’ work sound out a measurement of time, that is run by fantasy on ideal life, eternal trying to overcome the personal trauma, and questions/concerns on reality that is transcending a physical dimension of time.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/art-gallery-brooklyn-nyc-dumbo-artexhibit-artindumbo" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">#art #gallery #brooklyn #nyc #dumbo #artexhibit #artindumbo</a></div></div></div> Mon, 06 Jun 2016 14:24:37 +0000 rabbitholeprojects 1276 at https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com https://www.rabbitholeprojects.com/content/sunday-june-12-vague-name-time#comments
