Dear friends, 

Save the date for my next and LAST movie night at the Rabbithole! As your Rabbit Movie Night curator for the past 3 years, I am soon leaving the country and am contributing one last time to this amazing space with a special evening. I'm inviting local talents to present their latest films, and we'll have the pleasure to invite our good friend SUGARLIFE to preform live one more time.

SUGARLIFE 

Born in France, Sugarlife (Christian Dautresme) is a performance/music artist living in New York City. “It’s like watching a cheap live daytime soap in which the main female character unravels onstage. There is usually some sort of molting which follows…” says Sugarlife. “Imagine if the United States became a third world country and people had to resort to living room theatre or decrepit mall theater for entertainment. I’m trying to… manifest the subconscious imagery that inhabits the world of dreams and the world of films by the likes of David Lynch, John Waters, Bunuel, Almodovar and others.

"Sugarlife explores and desecrates the time-based and spatial notions ofperformance art, identity, and sexuality with an entertaining and often absurd interactive, live performance. It tends to be hilarious as well as very scary. Whether charging the air with electronic blips, conjuring up a damaged visitor from the realms of the immortal spirits such as Kazuo Ono and Tatsumi Hijikata, or singing in a celestial soprano, Sugarlife becomes a sonic shaman whose transcendence is the only constant. Neo-Fluxus freak out? Absurdist action art? The ghost of G.G. Allin as a drag queen from a distant planet? Sugarlife transcends any classification."

 The New Harmony is the story of a corporate ad writer who responds to a small voice deep inside himself and decides to do whatever he can to make the world a better place. This film addresses questions such as: Is poetry useful? Do people live too long? And what happens when a liberal guy goes off the grid? Made in Brooklyn, 2011-2012, 80 minutes long. Starring John Christopher Morton, Mick Collins, Akiva Saunders, Forrest Gillespie, Edgar Oliver and a large ensemble cast.

Rabbit movie nights are felling a bit nostalgic, so we are going back to the way we used to do it. This next Thursday May 16th, we're doing a FREE screening BYOB! Bring your favorite drinks and snacks. Just like the old days. Don't miss this!

BRANDED TO KILL, 1967

is a unique rendering of the Yakuza (gangster) genre, part film noir, part surreal satire, this movie is known for it's rather hard to follow storyline, and avant grade qualities which gained it's place into the Japanese New Wave movement.

The story follows Goro Hanada in his life as a contract killer. He falls in love with a woman named Misako, who recruits him for a seemingly impossible mission. When the mission fails, he becomes hunted by the phantom Number One Killer, whose methods threaten his sanity as much as his life.

Suzuki was a visionary and ahead of his time. Due to the Nikkatsu Studio's many warnings to Suzuki to avoid his lavish un-commercial style, the production of 'Branded to Kill' was limited to a low budget and purely black and white film (most of Suzuki films are characterize with pop colors). But these restrictions only allowed more creative initiatives from the director. His eccentric style cost him the boot from the major production company, blacklisting him for the next 10 years. Only later in the 80's was Suzuki acclaimed master cult director by counterculture critics and the likes of Jim Jamusch and Wong Kar-Wai.

Ramon on the Wurlitzer and Fa scratching CD's on a turntable combined their improv talents with a wirlwind of pre-recorded piano samples...

Movie Nights at the Rabbithole continue this month with a screening of Czech filmmaker Milos Forman's "The Firemen's Ball", the film that pushed Forman into exile from his native country, opened by a one of a kind live performance by TOM RAMON vs FUCKINTOSH.

8pm : TOM RAMON vs FUCKINTOSH

"When the sounding worlds of Tom Ramon vs. Fuckintosh collide, prepared piano sounds are hunted by manipulated CD's. Meaning, a vintage wurlitzer will pussyfoot between Fuckintosh's rhythms controlled by a converted record player. Their obsessed admiration for improvised music is in the offing as soon as the first note or noise or sneezer drops."

8:30pm : THE FIREMEN'S BALL

A must see classic! Director of "One flew over the Cuckoo's nest", "Man on the Moon" and "Amadeus" to name a few… this is Milos Forman's first color film, and the last one he filmed in his mainland Czechoslovakia before going into exile. The film is a masterful slapstick comedy that focuses on the disastrous annual ball of a small town's volunteer fire department. The casts are mainly non actors who are actual firemen from the town this film was shot in. In its portrayal of the collapse of well-intentioned plans, and hence the prevailing corruption of this local community, the film has widely been interpreted as a satire on the East European Communist system, and it was "banned forever" in Czechoslovakia following the Soviet invasion of 1968. Luckily Truffaut and Godard picked up the rights to the film as Forman was facing 10 years imprisonment for "economic damage tot he state", and saved this czech new wave beauty.

For a wonderful start into the new year of 2013, Rabbithole is pleased to present it's first movie night of the year with a very special performance by SUGAR LIFE, followed by a screening of FEMALE TROUBLE by John Waters. That means double trouble!

8pm: SUGAR LIFE

"If looking at my work in the context of Guy Debord’s society of the spectacle, the essential character of the spectacle is said to be a 'negation of life which has invented a visual form for itself', While trying to go against the grandiose spectacle created by society, I aim to eventually be assimilated by it and to bend the light that illuminates it.

8:30pm: FEMALE TROUBLE

The king of bad taste at his best. This classic John Waters tells the depraved life story of obese criminal Dawn Davenport (Divine), from her bad-girl youth as a go-go dancer on Baltimore's infamous Block to her death in the electric chair. Populated with Waters' typical appallingly hilarious cast of screwed-up social misfits and dysfunctional lunatics, this is a wonderful thoroughly deranged comedy. An outrageous delight which has formed the raw back bone of today's cultural subconscious.

Thu NOV 29th: SunMoon (live) + "Leo the Last" by John Boorman

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Due to schedule conflict, we were requested to change our screening last minute. We apologize for all inconveniences. We'll be screening the surreal 'Leo the Last' by John Boorman instead, still opened by a warming performance by Benoit Guerroué's SUNMOON.

8pm: SUNMOON

Benoit Guerroué is a French native who spent his youth the in the mystical land of Brittany, where he started playing shows and self-releasing an impressive amount of material under the name CARBONIC. Ten years ago he moved to the US where he continued recording, collaborating, and touring/playing in bands.

His performances are extremely varied, ranging from songs with just an acoustic guitar to more experimental renditions incorporating loops, electric guitar, keyboard. His live performance has presented as a 2-piece, 3-piece, and even 7-piece band. Leading and unifying all manifestations of his band, however, is a voice that is sublime, and otherworldly; a voice that comes from the heart, softly taking you away to another realm.

Today playing under the Moniker SUNMOON, Benoit continues to channel his inspiration (whether it be Nature, love, or music...) through this special inner world to explore expression through sound and create a singular and very personal work of art.

8:30pm: LEO THE LAST

Director of the famed Zardoz, John Boorman's less known, yet equally compelling film "Leo the Last", is based on the George Tabori play "The Prince" and deals with class struggles of the poor against the haughty royals. Starring Marcello Mastroianni as the last in line of princes who gradually emerges from his decaying mansion to become involved with and help the people living in his deteriorating London neighborhood. This film won Best Director at Cannes in 1970.

Last week's movie night opened with an amazing performance by newly formed band August Wells, French horn, violon and keys followed Ken Griffin's entrancing voice and his guitar. Screened behind them were excerpts of Jean Rollin's first film, 1968 "The rape of the Vampire".

Rabbit Movie Nights are back! with our halloween special on this october 18th. We'll be screening 1971 vampire horror flick "Daughters of Darkness", directed by Belgian director Harry Kümel, opened with a live performance by August Wells.

8pm: AUGUST WELLS:

"Up on a hill, near a city that once bustled, but is now inhabited by people who have lost things like teeth, limbs and love, a man is singing. His voice, beautiful, broken, makes everything around it fall quiet. Everything but the other instruments that swell up for emphasis, then fade back, tumbling down and down and down."

This is August Wells, a collection of songs and arrangements with vocals, electric guitar and piano with violin, percussion and various wind instruments. At its heart, Ken Griffin who has wandered the world and its venues with Rollerskate Skinny, Kid Silver and The Favorite Sons. Accompanying Ken along the way, John Rauchenberger on piano with Sasha Vine and Louis Schwadron"

In Dublin and London, Ken Griffin recorded Shoulder Voices for Beggars Banquet label and Horsedrawn Wishes for Warner Bros. Records with Rollerskate Skinny and Dead City Sunbeams with Kid Silver. In New York City, with The Favourite Sons, Ken recorded Down Beside Your Beauty and The Great Deal of Love.

John Rauchenberger is a New York City piano player who has played with The Favourite Sons, Maggie Estep, J.C Morrison, Dee Pop, Daniel Carter and Dave Sewelson.

Sasha Vine is a Violinist from London England who has performed with The Sian Alice Group, Mike Bones, Ryan Sawyer, Patrick Holmes and Charles Gayle.

Louis Schwadron leads the psych-pop band SKY WHITE TIGER and has recorded and performed with artists as far reaching as Radiohead, David Bowie, Elton John, Sufjan Stevens, Grizzly Bear, The National, St. Vincent, and a batch of supporting US tour dates with Rufus Wainwright.

8:30pm: DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS:

This 70's Belgian horror flick, is a classy erotic vampire film based on Sheridan le Fanu's gothic novel "Camilla", the classic tale of a lesbian vampire. Director Harry Kümel directs with stunning visuals, and reflects in many ways the campy lightness of Jean Rollin's stylish redemption horror genre. Delphine Seyrig's exquisite performance as the Countess Bathory is most notable is this film, resembling strangely a young Marlene Dietrich.

Linton Smith and Devin Starks: the young jazz duo swept us away as they performed alongside Larry Jordan's animated master experimental work from a set of shorts dating from the 50s till the 80s. And then Peter Greenaway followed... zebras, amputees, siamese twins, time lapses of animal decomposition... the usual good stuff..

This July Rabbit Movie Night will be screening the strangely beautiful "A Zed and Two Noughts" by controversial British director Peter Greenaway, opened by the "The Smith/Sternberg Duo".

8pm:

THE SMITH/STERNBERG DUO

consists of Linton Smith and Joanna Sternberg. Smith is a trumpeter from New Orleans and Sternberg is a bassist hailing from New York. The group plays jazz music and has been playing together for a year now.

8:30pm:

A ZED AND TWO NOUGHTS

Peter Greenaway's 1985 film is a multi-layered satire playing with the idea of ZOOs, siamese symmetry, Darwin's evolution and the decomposition of the living. Dirty stories, teddy bear songs and legless people take part throughout the outlandish storyline which more or less explored the aftermath of a car crash caused by a large swan, leaving 2 zoologists twin brothers wives-less and obsessed with documenting decay. Admiring Jean-Luc Godard's claim that Jan Vermeer was the true "first cinematographer" with his mastery over the manipulation of light, Greenaway pays an hommage to the great painter by incorporating scenes and lighting inspired by the master's paintings and personal life.
